CUNNINGHAM'S CHRONICLE

April 28, 2014

All students have created reading goals with Accelerated Reader. Please ask your child about his or her goal. To help your child reach his or her goal by May 2nd, please encourage nightly reading for 20 minutes.

LASSO A BOOK CALENDAR: Don't forget to sign every night on the Lasso a Book Calendar.  The calendar will be due on April 30th.

Reading

Students will be reading about different cultures and how those cultures are shared in the communities through celebrations.  Students will create a poster to advertise one of the celebrations.  Your child will work on this activity for the next two weeks.

Grades will be given in Reading, Social Studies, and Language Arts.

Students will begin a Historical Fiction book study: A Lion to Guard Us

We will read and discuss elements of the novel and make inferences about events, and characters.

Language Arts/Writing

Students will be reviewing sentence fragments and run on sentences this week.

Students will begin an explanatory writing piece on their favorite family tradition.  Your child will come home this week to discuss possible topics for their explanatory writing.  Please take the time to discuss family traditions that your family celebrate and where that tradition comes from.  This will help your child determine the best topic to write about in class.  Your child will work on this for the next 2-3 weeks.  We will go through the complete writing process with this piece of writing.

   Math

Unit of Study: Elapsed Time (Addition/Subtraction of Time)

                                    and Liquid Capacity

Students will calculate elapsed time and explore with liquid capacity in both customary and metric units.

Students will continue to identify math actions in story problems and solve using pictures, numbers and words.

PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD PRACTICING MULTIPLICATION FACTS TO THE 10'S EVERY NIGHT.  THIS IS A PROMOTION REQUIREMENT.

We will do a timed multiplication fact quiz every morning.  Students will move to the next level everytime they score a 100 on the 3 minute quiz.

Students will continue taking the timed multiplication fact promotion assessment every three weeks.  Each time the promotion test is given it will count for a math grade.  It will not count as a test grade, but as a daily work grade.
