DATE  BOOK TITLE  MY RELFECTION
Jan. 21  Gosseberry Park  Today was the first day of reading this novel.  I think I am going to enjoy this book.  The characters are interesting and FUNNY!  I especially like Gwendolyn, the hermit crab.  She seems very wise and motherly to Kona the labordor.  I can't wait to get to know Stumpy the squirrel's character.  Stumpy loves to collect odd things.  I wonder if she will ever find that amazing glowing watch!
Jan. 22  Gooseberry Park CH. 2-3  While reading today I found out how Kona, Professor Albert, Stumpy, and Gwendolyn came together as friends.  Prof. Albert got Gwendolyn first because he became lonely after he retired.  They did EVERYTHING together.  Then the prof. found out about a litter of puppies and decided to take a gander at them.  They were all chocolate labs and very playful except for one... he jumped in the prof. lap and loved to cuddle.  So Professor Albert took him and called him Kona. Kona met Stumpy in the park and became friends.  Kona would tell Stumpy all about Gwendolyn and tell Gwendolyn all about Stumpy.  They became very special friends.
Jan. 27  Gooseeberry Park Ch. 4  This chapter introduced a new character.  His name is Murray and he's a bat.  He lives right above Stumpy in the same tree.  Murray seems silly and likes to tell jokes.  One more thing I know about Murray is he LOVES to eat!  I can't wait to see how Murray develops in the story. I think Murray will be the silly one, Gwendolyn will be the teacher, or wise one and Kona will be serious.
Jan. 29  Gosseberry Park Ch. 5-7  Wow! This was an exciting part of the book.  The author made me feel exactly how the characters were feeling when Stumpy was having her babies and when the terrible ice storm hit.   Stumpy is a very brave mother to keep her babies safe and warm, especially since she is hearing the cracking and falling of trees everywhere around her.  I wonder what she will do now and.... where is Murray?

Gooseberry Park

Ch. 8-10

Poor Kona!  He goes out to find Stumpy, but instead finds her treehouse completely demolished.  He was so scared because he didn't see any sign of her or the babies.  Finally Kona hears a cry for help and it's Murray.  Stumpy had left the babies with Murray and said she was going to find Kona.  The problem is that Stumpy is looking in the wrong place for Kona.  Instead of Miller Street where he lives now, Stumpy is looking for Paradise Lane where Kona was born.  I don't know what Kona is going to do now.  I sure hope Stumpy is okay and Kona finds her soon.   At least Kona has Murray and the babies safe at his house!

Gooseberry Park

Ch. 11

This chapter really helps the reader learn about Murray's personality.  Murray sure does love to eat and watch T.V.  He is practically eating all of Professor Albert's food.  Kona tells him to stay in the basement, but then Murray hears the television show "Jeopardy", so he flies up the stairs and hides in the china cabinet to watch the show.  Kona has to distract Professor Albert so he doesn't see Murray.  Therefore, Kona knocks over a lamp to get the Professor's attention.  Murray quickly grabs oreos in his mounth and carries some with his feet.  Then he flies back down to the basement. That was a close call for Kona!

Gooseberry park

Ch. 12

Well, Professor Alber is feeling a little confused about all the food missing!  The only things that were missing were bags of junk food and sweets, NEVER spinach or lima beans.  So the Professor just thinks he bought those things but really didn't!  Murray is really boggling the Professor's mind.  Kona and the Professor finally resume their walks to the park since the terrible ice storm.  Kona begins some investigation and inquires from many animals if they know where Stumpy might be.  While talking with a duck, the duck suggests that he talk with a weasle (weasles LOVE to gossip).  So, Kona finds a weasle and tells the weasle a strange story about a dog on Miller Street that wants to return a treasure back to Stumpy, and the dog will be putting out a special sign with a special message on it tomorrow night. Kona is hoping that the weasle will spread this message like wild fire, so that hopefully Stumpy will hear about it.  I wonder what the special message is that Kona will put on the sign?  I know he will ask Gwendolyn for help, since she is so wise.  With her help, I know Kona will come up with the perfect message that will help Stumpy find her way to Kona.

This is one of my FAVORITE books! Cynthia Rylant is a great author. I love the way she uses imagery to help me visualize what's happening in the story. She does a really good job of building up the story line, which makes you want to keep reading, and reading, and reading!!!
