Reading  

Your child is responsible for reading at least 15 min. every night.  They will respond to their nightly reading 3 days out of the week on a reading log provided to them by the teacher.  Please be sure to check nightly and sign on Thursday night.  The reading log is due Friday morning.  Don't forget to have your child practice reading his/her fluency poem nightly.

LASSO A BOOK CALENDAR: Don't forget to sign every night on the Lasso a Book Calendar.  The calendar will be due on November 29th.

 

 

Genre Study: Procedural Text 

 

We will identify the characteristics of procedural text. 

Students will sit and brainstorm all of their favorite family holiday snack, or dessert recipes

with  parent/s.  Make a list and talk about them.  Once they have selected ONE recipe, review the steps in this recipe.  Make sure your child is writing these steps down; including the ingredients and tools needed to make the food your child has selected.  Your child will bring in this handwritten rough draft of a recipe to class on Friday, November 22nd.  Your child will receive an automatic 5 points for bringing in the recipe on time.

 

Reading Skill: 

Students will continue to identify character traits and interpret character development  with textual support.

Language Arts/Writing 

Students will use sequencing words to explain steps in making cranberry sauce.  Students will be expected to apply capitalization, punctuation, high frequency spelling words and sensory detail in their composition.

   Math

We will continue exploring the concept of putting together equal sets with manipulatives by making arrays.  We move to the more abstract using expressions to model given manipulatives, and then begin applying multiplication concept with word problems.

We began 3 minute timed multiplication fact quizzes this week.  We will do a timed quiz every morning.  Students will move to the next level everytime they score a 100 on the 3 minute quiz.

Social Studies

  

 

Students will identify the 3 Branches and recognize the person(s) responsible for each branch and the responsibilities each branch holds. We will then learn about our state and city government.

Science 

Students will use map skills to locate wetlands in the United States and use a map key to recognize the temperatures and amount of precipitation that falls in Wetland areas.  We will also learn the history of cranberry harvesting and the importance of this plant in the wetland ecosystem.

We will identify the characteristics of drama genre.    Students will learn to make inferences in their reading in both literary fiction and non-fiction text.

   Math

   

Students will apply adding, subtracting and estimating in word problems.  Students will practice subtracting across zeros with 3-4 digit numbers.  Students will take Unit Test on Friday.

 

Please be sure that your child is practicing +/- facts daily at home.  It is important for them to have automaticity of these facts in order to be successful with learning multiplication facts.

Social Studies

  

 

Students will explore the documents that helped in founding the USA: The Declarationn of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Students will learn that wetland ecosystems act as a purifying system for the Earth. Students will demostrate a purifying system.  Students will learn to use a microscope to look at protozoa.

3rd Grade will be performing at the Veteran's Day Performance. Please have your child wear red, white, and blue for the performance. Please have your child's heart design sent back to school no later than Monday, November 4th.
